Parragirls Past Present
Parragirls, Past, Present is an immersive, 3D, 360-degree film that uses Parragirls memories to re-imagine the future, allowing the audience to walk with Parragirls in a present moment at Parramatta Girls Home.
Parragirls, Past, Present provides a new way to speak about the experience of childhood abuse. It makes space for an alternative forum distinct from legal testimony unlike that of testimonies given in official investigations which is both traumatising and distressing and does not always empower those who testify. The film offers Parragirls a position of authority, in contrast to the victim’s identity as a powerless dependant of the state when exposed to public scrutiny in giving evidence at official inquiries and legal proceedings.
Commissioned by the University of New South Wales National Institute of Experimental Arts (NIEA) for the Big Anxiety festival, the film navigates the experiential psychological dimensions of the institutional site. These include the fear of punishment, the control over their bodies and being under constant surveillance.
